Food and Spice Heritage 5-Day Tour

Cardamom, clove and cinnamon bark scent the air in Matale's spice gardens long before you see the plants. From Colombo's Pettah markets to a Kandyan kitchen and the seafront fish stalls of Galle, travellers taste, shop and cook their way across Sri Lanka, learning the dishes that define each region.

Overview

Sri Lankan cooking is a story of trade and terrain, and this short journey reads it at the source. In Colombo, the crowded lanes of Pettah sell everything from dried fish to curry leaves, and as evening falls Galle Face Green fills with stalls frying isso wade, crisp lentil fritters topped with prawns. The road then climbs inland to Matale, long known for its spice gardens, where pepper vines, nutmeg and cardamom grow in the shade and you can see how cinnamon bark is peeled by hand.

In Kandy, a home-style cooking session reveals the rhythm of a rice-and-curry meal: tempering mustard seeds, scraping coconut for pol sambol, balancing a creamy dhal with a fresh mallum of shredded greens. Kandy’s central market adds tropical fruit and spice stalls, while the Temple of the Tooth gives the city its spiritual heart.

The journey finishes on the south coast at Galle, where fishermen sell their catch on the seafront near the old fort and coastal cooking leans on goraka, black pepper and seafood.

The route, pace and hotels shown here are a starting point to be shaped around your interests; nothing is booked until you have confirmed the itinerary.
