About Galle
Galle Fort was first fortified by the Portuguese in the 16th century and extensively rebuilt by the Dutch from the 17th century. Its ramparts, churches, warehouses and grid of streets survive as one of the best-preserved fortified towns built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications) in 1988.
Today the fort is a lived-in town of cafés, galleries and boutique hotels, and the beaches of Unawatuna, Koggala and the wider south coast are a short drive away.
