Sri Lanka Culinary 7-Day Journey

Follow Sri Lankan food from field to pan. Over a week you browse Colombo's Pettah markets, cook over a wood fire in a village near Sigiriya, learn how spices grow in Matale, taste tea in the hills above Kandy and finish at Galle's early-morning fish market.

Overview

Sri Lankan cooking is a story of trade and terrain. Spices from the hills, coconut from the coast, rice from the dry-zone paddies and influences carried by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British arrivals all meet on a single plate of rice and curry. This journey lets you taste that history where it happens, starting in Colombo’s Pettah district, a crush of wholesale stalls selling dried fish, chillies and jaggery, and ending the first day with prawn vadai on Galle Face Green.

In the Cultural Triangle you can visit the busy Dambulla wholesale market in the morning and then cook in a village kitchen, grating coconut and grinding spices by hand. On the way to Kandy, a Matale spice garden explains how cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg are grown, and Kandy’s central market adds hill-country produce and a tea tasting. On the south coast, Galle brings fish markets, Burgher-influenced dishes such as lamprais and a final cooking class built around seafood curries and sambols.

Every detail, from the route and daily pace to the hotels you stay in, is adjusted to suit you, and nothing is booked until you have confirmed the plan.
