About Colombo

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s largest city and commercial capital (the administrative capital is neighbouring Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte). Its old harbour drew Arab, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders, and the city still mixes colonial buildings in the Fort district with the crowded bazaar streets of Pettah, Buddhist temples, Hindu kovils, mosques and churches.

Most international visitors arrive through Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, and Colombo is a convenient first or last stop: a day here is enough for the seafront at Galle Face Green, Gangaramaya Temple, the National Museum and an evening of street food.

Why visit

  • Colonial-era Fort district and the busy bazaars of Pettah
  • Gangaramaya Temple and the Seema Malaka on Beira Lake
  • Colombo National Museum, the country’s largest museum
  • Sunset and street food on Galle Face Green
