Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle 6-Day Journey

Read Sri Lanka's history in stone, from the sacred city of Anuradhapura to the medieval courts of Polonnaruwa. Along the way, travellers stand before the towering Aukana Buddha, climb Sigiriya in the cool of early morning, step into Dambulla's painted caves and share a village lunch among the paddy fields.

Overview

The Cultural Triangle holds the deepest roots of Sri Lankan civilisation, and this journey takes it broadly in chronological order. From Colombo the road runs north to Anuradhapura, capital for more than a millennium, where the sacred Bodhi tree, colossal brick dagobas and ancient bathing ponds can be explored by bicycle. Nearby Mihintale, traditionally regarded as the place where Buddhism was introduced to the island, offers wide views across the plains in late afternoon light.

Moving south-east, the Aukana Buddha, a standing figure some twelve metres tall carved from rock, gazes calmly over a quiet reservoir. Around Sigiriya, life slows with a village visit among paddy fields, before an early climb of the rock citadel and an afternoon in the painted caves of Dambulla.

The journey closes in Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital, whose palaces, Vatadage and Gal Vihara sculptures sit beside the Parakrama Samudra reservoir. A jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla offers the chance to see elephants grazing by the water.

Treat this as a framework: the route, pace and hotels are tailored to each traveller, and nothing is reserved until you give the go-ahead and confirm.
