About Sigiriya

Sigiriya is the rock fortress built by King Kashyapa in the late 5th century CE, on a granite outcrop that rises roughly 180 metres above the surrounding forest. The site combines a summit palace, the Lion’s Paw gateway, the painted frescoes and the polished Mirror Wall with elaborate early landscaped water and boulder gardens at its foot.

It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Ancient City of Sigiriya) in 1982 and is the natural base for exploring the Cultural Triangle: Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the elephant parks of Minneriya and Kaudulla are all within easy reach.
