Dambulla Cave Temple Visit

Five caves, more than 150 Buddha images and ceilings painted in ochre and red: Dambulla’s rock temple is cool, incense-scented and quietly overwhelming. A short climb up the granite outcrop brings you to its shrines and centuries of murals.

Overview

The cave temple at Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been a place of worship for more than two thousand years. Tradition links it to King Valagamba, who is said to have sheltered here in the first century BCE and later transformed the caves into a temple in gratitude.

A stepped path climbs the granite outcrop, with wide views across the plains to Sigiriya on clear days. Beneath a long overhang lie five caves. The first holds a reclining Buddha cut from the rock; the second and largest, the Maharaja Vihara, is crowded with seated and standing figures beneath painted ceilings that seem to ripple with scenes from the Buddha’s life and the island’s history. In all, the caves contain more than 150 images and some of the most extensive murals in Sri Lanka.

Moving slowly from cave to cave, as monks and pilgrims do, is the most rewarding way to absorb it.

Good to know

  • Shoes are left at the entrance to the caves and hats removed; cover shoulders and knees.
  • The climb is moderate and takes around 15 to 20 minutes at a gentle pace.
  • Photography is allowed in places, but never pose with your back to a Buddha image.
  • Early morning or late afternoon is cooler, and monkeys on the path may snatch food or bags.

This visit can be added to any private itinerary through the Cultural Triangle and fits neatly between Sigiriya and Kandy.
