Family Sri Lanka 8-Day Journey

Bullock-cart rides between paddy fields, a climb past giant lion's paws at Sigiriya and a slow train winding through tea estates make this week easy to love at any age. Families travel from Negombo to the ancient north, the hill country and the beaches of Bentota, with short stages and plenty of breaks.

Overview

Travelling with children is all about variety and manageable distances, and this route delivers both. After a gentle first night by the lagoon in Negombo, close to the airport, the car heads north to Sigiriya. Here young explorers can ride a bullock cart and paddle a traditional catamaran on a village tank, then climb the famous rock fortress the next morning, past frescoes and the giant lion’s paws. An afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla offers a good chance, though never a guarantee, of seeing elephants.

In Kandy, drummers and dancers perform the island’s traditional dances, and the Temple of the Tooth makes a gentle introduction to Sri Lankan Buddhism. The following day the train climbs to Ella through tea country – window seats encouraged – and the Nine Arch Bridge is a fun place to wait for a passing train.

The journey ends on the west coast at Bentota, with a boat ride among the mangrove islands of the Madu River and calm afternoons by the sea.

Treat this as a framework: the route, pace and hotels are tailored to each traveller, and nothing is reserved until you give the go-ahead and confirm.
