Guided barefoot walking practice
Walking barefoot is part of everyday Sri Lankan life — shoes come off at every temple, shrine and home, and slow walking meditation (sakman bhavana) is practised in temple grounds. This short practice brings the two together.
- Arrive Stand still on clean grass, sand or bare earth. Feel the whole sole of each foot. Let your shoulders drop. (1 minute)
- Slow steps Walk very slowly, as monks do in sakman (walking) meditation: note “lifting… moving… placing” for every step. (3–5 minutes)
- Breath and feet Breathe in for four steps and out for six. If the mind wanders, come back to the feeling of the ground. (3–5 minutes)
- Notice the earth Cool dew, warm sand, soft grass, a root or a stone — name each feeling quietly without judging it. (2–5 minutes)
- Close with kindness Stand still again and wish well to yourself, the people around you and the land you stand on — a short metta (loving-kindness) reflection. (1 minute)
A soft bell sounds at the end. Put the phone in your pocket and keep your eyes on the path.
Safety first
- Do not walk barefoot if you have diabetes, numb feet (neuropathy), poor circulation or a wound on your feet — sit with your feet on the grass instead, or keep soft shoes on.
- Choose clean, short grass or beach sand you can see. Avoid damp soil near animals and farm fields (hookworm), broken glass, ant nests and long grass where snakes may rest.
- Midday sand and stone can burn — go in the early morning or late afternoon.
- At temples, follow local custom: remove shoes and hats, wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
What science says: a few small studies on “earthing” report better sleep and calmer mood, but the evidence is early and not conclusive. Time outdoors in green spaces and mindful walking have stronger research behind them. This practice is for relaxation — it does not treat any illness.
