Barefoot Earthing Morning

Dew still on the grass and the village just waking: a guided sunrise walk without shoes, slow walking meditation and a warm herbal drink — grounding the Sri Lankan way.

Overview

In Sri Lanka, taking off your shoes is an everyday gesture of respect — at every temple, shrine and family home. Slow walking meditation, sakman bhavana, is practised barefoot in temple grounds across the island. This gentle morning brings those habits together with the idea many travellers know as “earthing” or grounding.

Soon after sunrise, a local guide takes you to a quiet village garden or the grassy edge of a paddy field. After a short safety check of the ground, you walk barefoot on dewy grass, first freely and then very slowly, noting each step as monks do. The walk ends with a few minutes of loving-kindness reflection and a warm herbal drink such as coriander (koththamalli) or beli flower tea.

Good to know

  • Best in the first hour after sunrise, when the grass is cool and the light is soft.
  • Not suitable barefoot for people with diabetes, numb feet or foot wounds — you can join seated or in soft shoes.
  • The ground is checked first; sites are chosen for clean, short grass.
  • This is a relaxation experience, not a medical treatment.
