Calculated from the Moon’s position (Lahiri). Poya falls on the day the full-moon lunar day (Purnima tithi) begins, or the next day when it begins in the evening — this matches every official Poya of 2025 and 2026. The government’s Poya list always decides; on Poya days alcohol and meat shops are closed.

○ Full moon (Poya) practice

  1. Observe the day Many Sri Lankans keep the eight precepts (ata sil) on Poya, dress in white and spend the day at a temple. Even one quiet, alcohol-free, kind day is a good start.
  2. Loving-kindness under the moon Sit outside where you can see the moon. Breathe slowly and repeat silently: “May I be well. May the people I love be well. May all beings be well.” (10 minutes)
  3. Moonlight walking Walk slowly and silently in moonlight — a garden, a beach or a temple courtyard — noting each step. (10 minutes)
  4. Give something Poya is a day of dana (giving): food, time or help for someone who needs it. Write down one thing you will give this month.

● New moon practice

  1. Breath meditation In the dark-moon quiet, sit and follow the breath at the nostrils (anapanasati). Count ten breaths, then start again. (10 minutes)
  2. Let go on paper Write three things you are ready to let go of and one intention for the coming fortnight. Keep the intention where you will see it.
  3. Rest early Traditionally a low-energy night — eat lightly, dim the lights and sleep early.

Visiting a temple on Poya: wear white or light clothes that cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and keep your voice low.
