Ratnapura Gems and Rainforest 4-Day Tour

Muddy gravel swirls in a wicker basket beside a Ratnapura gem pit, and every so often something glints. Travellers see how sapphires have been mined by hand here for centuries, browse the town's gem-trading street, then head into Sinharaja, a lowland rainforest alive with endemic birds and towering trees.

Overview

Ratnapura’s name means ‘city of gems’, and the river valleys around it have yielded sapphires, rubies, cat’s eyes and other stones for many centuries. Mining is still largely done by hand: workers descend narrow pits shored up with timber, haul up baskets of gravel called illam and wash it in the stream while experienced eyes search for colour. A visit to a working pit, the gem traders who gather in town each morning and a gem museum bring this unusual heritage to life.

The valley is lush and green, with waterfalls such as Bopath Ella just outside town and the revered Maha Saman Devale on the riverbank. From there the road winds south to Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the island’s most important lowland rainforest. Trails walked with a local forest guide reveal mixed bird flocks, Sri Lanka blue magpies, purple-faced langurs and tiny frogs in the leaf litter.

It is an easy-paced, green escape that pairs naturally with the south coast or the hill country.

We adapt the route, the rhythm of each day and the style of hotel to your preferences, and no booking is made until you confirm.
