About Sinharaja

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is the country’s last viable area of primary lowland tropical rainforest. It was declared a biosphere reserve in 1978 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, and a very high proportion of its trees, birds and other animals are endemic to Sri Lanka.

Walks with a local guide follow forest trails to streams and waterfalls; mixed-species bird flocks, the Sri Lanka blue magpie and many endemic reptiles and amphibians are among the highlights. The main entrances are Kudawa (on the north-western side) and Deniyaya/Mederipitiya (in the south).
