Sinharaja Rainforest Walk

Listen first: in Sinharaja a chattering mixed flock often gives itself away before a blue magpie flashes through the understorey. A licensed forest guide leads you into Sri Lanka’s last major lowland rainforest along its shaded trails.

Overview

Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve, protects the largest remaining tract of primary lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka. A high proportion of its trees, birds and other species are found only on the island, and it is regarded as one of the most important places for endemic wildlife in South Asia.

With a licensed guide you follow narrow trails beneath a tall, closed canopy, stopping to look and listen. Sinharaja is famous for its mixed-species bird flocks, which can bring endemics such as the Sri Lanka blue magpie and red-faced malkoha into view together. Purple-faced langurs may move through the treetops, while closer to the ground you might find giant squirrels, colourful lizards, frogs or a green pit viper resting on a branch.

Streams cross the paths, and the forest’s humid hush is broken only by birdsong and insects.

Good to know

  • Mornings are the liveliest time for birds; January to April and August to September usually bring the most settled weather.
  • A licensed forest guide is required for entry, and visitors must stay on the trails.
  • Leeches are common; wear long trousers, leech socks and closed shoes, and bring a rain jacket.
  • Walks are moderate but can be humid and muddy. Sightings of specific species are never assured.

This rainforest walk can be added to any private itinerary in the south or south-west, with the start time arranged around you.
