Arugam Bay Surf 5-Day Tour
Watch a long right-hander peel off the point at sunset, then paddle out yourself on a gentler break the next morning. On Sri Lanka's south-east coast, travellers combine surf lessons with boat trips through Pottuvil's mangroves, ancient temples among the dunes and early safaris in Kumana National Park.

Overview
On the far south-east coast, Arugam Bay comes alive from around April to October, when the south-west monsoon brings steady offshore winds to this side of the island. The main point is known for its long right-hand wave, while spots such as Whiskey Point, Baby Point and Peanut Farm offer softer, more forgiving waves for beginners and improvers. Lessons with a local surf instructor fit easily around a relaxed beach schedule.
Beyond the surf, the region is full of quieter discoveries. A boat trip on the Pottuvil Lagoon glides through mangroves where kingfishers, herons and sometimes crocodiles appear. The Muhudu Maha Viharaya sits among the dunes at Pottuvil, and further south the Kudumbigala forest hermitage and the wetlands of Kumana National Park reward early risers with birdlife and, if fortunate, elephants. Tamil, Muslim and Sinhala communities live side by side here, and the food reflects it.
Expect sun, salt and simple pleasures – a fine contrast to the hill country or the Cultural Triangle.
Every element of this journey – the route, the daily pace and the choice of hotels – is tailored to you, and nothing is booked until you confirm the plan.
