Overview
Ella Rock rises to just over 1,000 metres directly across the valley from Ella town, and its summit offers one of the widest views in the hill country. The hike is a proper half-day walk, varied and rewarding, through working countryside rather than a manicured trail.
The route usually begins along the railway line before turning off past the Kital Ella waterfall and small farms, then climbs through tea, scrub and eucalyptus forest. The last stretch is steep and uneven, with roots and loose earth underfoot. At the top, the land falls away to the Ella Gap and the lowlands beyond, with Little Adam’s Peak on the opposite side and, on clear mornings, a sense of the distant southern plains.
Going with a guide matters here, as the paths fork often and are not signposted.
Good to know
- Start soon after sunrise to climb in cooler air and reach the top before cloud builds, usually by late morning.
- This is a moderate to challenging hike with a steep final section; good fitness and sturdy footwear are needed.
- Bring water, a light rain layer and sun protection; paths become slippery after rain.
- January to September tends to bring drier conditions than the north-east monsoon months.
The hike can be added to any private itinerary in Ella, with the start time arranged around you and the weather.
