Overview
Kalpitiya is a long, narrow peninsula on Sri Lanka’s north-west coast, separating Puttalam Lagoon from the Indian Ocean. Its shallow, sheltered lagoon and reliable seasonal winds suit kitesurfing well, especially for learners, who can often stand in the water while practising kite control. The area remains rural and low-key, with fishing villages, salt pans and long, empty stretches of shore.
A half-day session usually starts with kite theory and safety on the beach, followed by body-dragging and first board starts under the eye of a certified instructor. Experienced riders can hire equipment and explore the lagoon or join a downwind run along the coast. When the wind eases, the flat water is ideal for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, and between roughly November and April, boat trips off the coast may bring sightings of spinner dolphins.
Good to know
- The main wind season runs from about May to October, with a second, shorter season from around December to March.
- Learning to ride independently usually takes several sessions; a half day is an introduction.
- Wear a rash vest and reef shoes, and use strong sunscreen, as sun and wind are intense.
- You should be a confident swimmer with moderate fitness.
- Kalpitiya is around three to four hours by road from Colombo.
This experience can be added to any private itinerary, with timing arranged around the wind and your plans.
