Arugam Bay Surf Lesson
On the east coast, palms lean over a sweeping bay where right-hand point breaks wrap around rocky headlands. While learners start on gentler breaks with an instructor, experienced surfers can head for Arugam Bay's celebrated Main Point.

Overview
Arugam Bay, in Sri Lanka’s south-east, is one of South Asia’s best-known surf destinations, with a relaxed village atmosphere and a string of right-hand point breaks along the coast. Its season follows the south-west monsoon: while the south coast is rough, the east enjoys clean, offshore conditions, roughly from April to October.
Beginners are usually taken to softer breaks such as Baby Point, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm, where waves are smaller and more forgiving, while Main Point in the bay suits intermediate and advanced surfers. After a beach briefing on safety, paddling and pop-ups, your instructor works with you in the water, helping you time take-offs and read the sets. Early sessions catch glassy conditions before the wind picks up, and out of the water there are lagoon trips and wildlife in the nearby Kumana and Lahugala national parks.
Good to know
- The core season is May to September, with the most consistent swell usually from June to August.
- Some breaks run over rock or reef, so reef shoes can help; bring reef-safe sunscreen.
- You need to be a confident swimmer.
- Arugam Bay is around seven to eight hours by road from Colombo, so it combines well with Ella or Yala.
- Dress modestly in the village and respect local customs.
Surf sessions can be added to any private itinerary on the east coast, with timing arranged around the swell and your plans.
