Weligama Surf Lesson

Weligama means ‘sandy village’ in Sinhala, and its broad bay lives up to the name. In season, small, slow waves roll in over a sandy bottom, giving learners a soft landing and plenty of space. The tiny island of Taprobane sits just offshore, and stilt fishermen can sometimes be seen along the neighbouring coast.

Your lesson begins on the sand with board safety, paddling technique and the pop-up, before moving into waist-deep water where a qualified surf instructor helps you choose and catch waves. The focus is on timing, balance and reading the water, and the forgiving conditions let you build confidence quickly. Sessions include breaks to rest and review, and experienced surfers can instead be guided to the more challenging reef and point breaks along the coast towards Mirissa and Midigama.

Good to know

• The surf season runs from November to April; early mornings usually bring lighter winds and cleaner waves.
• Soft-top boards and rash vests are normally supplied; bring reef-safe sunscreen and water.
• You need to be able to swim, and paddling is tiring, so moderate fitness helps.
• Follow your instructor’s guidance on currents and surf etiquette.
• Easily combined with whale watching from Mirissa, which also runs from November to April.
