Saturn spends about 2½ years in each sign, so sade sati has three phases: the first (12th from the Moon), the peak (the Moon sign itself) and the last (2nd). Ashtama Shani (8th) and the 4th-house period are similar 2½-year phases.
Is sade sati always bad?
Not necessarily. Tradition describes it as a time of responsibility, patience and steady effort. If Saturn is strong or a yogakaraka in your chart (for example for Vrishabha or Tula Lagna), or the running dasha is good, the effect can be much milder.
Traditional remedies
- Lighting a sesame-oil lamp and worship of Shani on Saturdays
- Helping elders, disabled and poor people
- Care with driving, debt and risky investments
- Having the full chart checked by an astrologer before wearing a gem such as blue sapphire
