Kitulgala Adventure 3-Day Tour
Brown-green water foams over boulders on the Kelani River, rainforest presses in from both banks, and the call of 'paddle forward!' rings out as the raft drops into the next rapid. Just a few hours from Colombo, travellers raft, scramble down forest streams and walk trails rich in birdlife.

Overview
Kitulgala sits in a deep, wet valley on the road from Colombo to the hill country, and the Kelani River is its heart. A morning rafting trip runs a series of grade two to three rapids – exciting but suitable for most active first-timers, with safety briefings and equipment provided by licensed local operators. In the afternoon, canyoning adds natural rock slides, jumps into pools and short abseils beside small waterfalls.
The valley has a gentler side too. Across the river, reached by a short boat crossing, the Makandawa forest is home to endemic birds such as the Sri Lanka grey hornbill and orange-billed babbler, and a guided walk often turns up giant squirrels and monkeys. Film enthusiasts can find the stretch of river where ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ was filmed in the 1950s, while the nearby Belilena cave has yielded traces of the island’s prehistoric inhabitants.
It makes a lively short break, or an energetic stop between Colombo and Nuwara Eliya.
The route, pace and hotels shown here are a starting point to be shaped around your interests; nothing is booked until you have confirmed the itinerary.
