Kandy Cultural 3-Day Tour
Drums beat out across the lake as lamps are lit at the Temple of the Tooth, and the hills around Kandy fade to blue. Over three unhurried days, travellers explore the last royal capital's sacred sites, stroll Peradeniya's great botanic gardens and seek out carved village temples in the surrounding countryside.
Overview
Kandy was the seat of the island’s last kingdom until 1815, and it still feels like Sri Lanka’s cultural capital. At its centre, on the shore of an ornamental lake, stands the Sri Dalada Maligawa – the Temple of the Tooth – which enshrines a relic of the Buddha and draws pilgrims from across the country. Attending the evening ritual, with drumming, offerings of flowers and the scent of incense, is a moving introduction to the city. Later, a performance of Kandyan dance shows off acrobatic, elaborately costumed dancers.
Just outside town, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya spread across a loop of the Mahaweli River, with avenues of royal palms, an orchid house and a vast Javan fig tree. A short drive further brings the three temples of Embekke, Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya, admired for medieval wood carving and hilltop views.
A final morning might include the forest trails of Udawattakele, a walk through the busy central market and the hilltop Bahirawakanda Buddha overlooking the city.
