Spice Garden Visit in Matale

Crush a cardamom pod between your fingers, breathe in freshly scraped cinnamon bark and taste pepper straight from the vine. On the road north of Kandy, Matale's spice gardens show how Sri Lanka's celebrated spices actually grow.

Overview

The Matale district, just north of Kandy, has long been associated with spice growing, and the gardens along the Kandy to Matale road offer a close look at plants that once drew traders from across the world. A walk with a garden guide shows how cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, cocoa and turmeric grow, often side by side beneath taller shade trees.

Along the way you see how bark is peeled and rolled into cinnamon quills, how pepper vines climb their supporting trees, and how a ripe nutmeg splits to reveal its scarlet mace. Many gardens also explain the traditional uses of herbs in Sri Lankan cooking, and some include a short cookery demonstration. The visit fits neatly into the drive between Kandy and the Cultural Triangle, and pairs well with the nearby Aluvihare Rock Temple, where Buddhist scriptures were first committed to writing in the first century BCE.

Good to know

  • Most gardens end at a shop selling spices and herbal products; there is no obligation to buy, and it is worth buying only what you want.
  • Mornings and late afternoons are cooler for walking.
  • Paths are easy; wear light clothing and bring insect repellent.
  • Different spices flower and fruit at different times, so what you see varies through the year.

The garden visit can be added to any private itinerary, with timing arranged around your drive through the hill country.
