Nine Arch Bridge Walk
A horn echoes along the valley, then a blue train emerges from the tunnel and rolls across nine stone arches above the jungle. Walk through tea and village paths to Ella’s Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara.

Overview
The Nine Arch Bridge, completed in 1921, carries the hill-country railway across a deep ravine between Ella and Demodara. Built from stone, brick and cement, it is often noted for being constructed without steel, and its curve of arches against the green hillside has become one of Sri Lanka’s defining images.
The walk from Ella follows quiet lanes and footpaths through tea and small home gardens, with the sound of birds and the occasional tuk-tuk. As you near the bridge, the valley opens below and paths lead to viewpoints above and alongside the tracks. Timing your visit to a scheduled train lets you watch it cross slowly over the arches, a pleasure shared by local families and visitors alike.
Return the same way or continue to the small Demodara station, with a cup of Uva tea to finish.
Good to know
- Early morning is quieter and cooler; train times are approximate, so we check the day’s schedule before setting out.
- Paths can be steep and slippery after rain; wear shoes with good grip.
- Walking on the railway line is common but trains are active. Stay well back from the tracks when one approaches.
- The walk is easy to moderate and suits most fitness levels.
This walk can be added to any private itinerary in Ella, with timing arranged around you and the passing trains.
