Overview

The Main Line through Sri Lanka’s hill country was built during British rule to carry tea down to Colombo, and the section between Kandy and Ella is widely regarded as one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia. The train moves slowly enough to watch the landscape change in detail.

Leaving Kandy, the line follows the Mahaweli valley before climbing steadily past Nawalapitiya and Hatton into the high tea country, where pickers work the slopes and waterfalls spill down ravines. Beyond Nanu Oya, the stop for Nuwara Eliya, it reaches Pattipola, the highest station on the network at close to 1,900 metres, then threads through tunnels and cuttings to Haputale and Bandarawela before dropping towards Ella.

Vendors pass through with spiced snacks, and at small stations families wave from the platforms. We arrange your tickets and transfers so you simply sit back and watch.

Good to know

  • The journey is scheduled at around seven hours and delays are common; views are often clearest in the morning and in the drier months from January to April.
  • Reserved seats in the observation and first-class carriages are limited and can sell out weeks ahead, so book early.
  • Bring a light layer, as it is cool in the highlands, plus water and snacks.
  • Leaning out of doors and windows is popular but risky; please stay safely inside when passing tunnels and bridges.

The journey can be added to any private itinerary through the hill country, with your driver meeting you at Ella or any station en route.
