Handloom and Craft Village Visit
The steady clack of a wooden shuttle sets the rhythm in a weaver's workshop, where cotton becomes sarongs and hana fibre becomes patterned mats. Watch the looms at work, try a few rows yourself and meet the makers.

Overview
Sri Lanka’s craft traditions are still kept alive in family workshops, and this visit takes you into one along your route. In the Dumbara valley east of Kandy, families of the Kinnara community in Kalasirigama and Alokagama weave Dumbara mats from hana fibre, a craft UNESCO added to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021. Elsewhere in the hill country, small handloom workshops produce cotton sarongs, saris and table linen on foot-operated wooden looms, while on the south coast around Galle, women work beeralu bobbin lace, a technique that arrived during the colonial period.
You watch threads prepared, warped and woven, learn what the traditional motifs mean, and are usually invited to sit at a loom and try a few rows. There is time to talk with the artisans about how their skills pass between generations, and to buy directly from the person who made a piece if something catches your eye.
Good to know
- Which craft you see depends on your route: Kandy-area visits suit hana-mat and cotton weaving, while south-coast stays suit beeralu lace.
- Visit on a weekday during working hours, when the looms are most likely to be in use.
- These are working homes and studios, so please ask before taking photographs.
- Buying is entirely optional; carry some cash in rupees if you would like to purchase.
- Very little physical effort is involved, making it suitable for all ages.
This visit can be added to any private itinerary, and we arrange the timing around your route and pace.
