About Jaffna
Jaffna is the main city of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province and the heart of Sri Lankan Tamil culture. The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of the most important Hindu temples in the country, and its annual festival draws large crowds. The star-shaped Jaffna Fort, begun by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Dutch, overlooks the lagoon.
Causeways and ferries connect the city to the islands of the Jaffna peninsula, including Nainativu, with its Hindu and Buddhist shrines, and Delft. Jaffna’s cuisine — crab curry, odiyal kool and its own spice blends — is a reason to visit in itself.
